Emerald 6 Express Opening Dates
Emerald 6 Express opens on Whistler Mountain’s opening day, every season. It has appeared in every published opening-day lift list since it was built in 2018. For 2026-27 that means Friday 20 November 2026, conditions permitting.
Where Emerald 6 Express sits in the opening order
Emerald 6 Express is the backbone of Whistler Mountain’s early season. Together with the Whistler Village Gondola and Franz’s Chair it forms the opening-day trio that has appeared in every terrain package the resort has published since 2018.
The reason is elevation and aspect. Emerald runs from 1,413 m to 1,835 m on the mid-mountain north face — high enough to hold early snow, low enough to be sheltered, and covering wide groomed intermediate terrain that needs far less avalanche control than the alpine bowls above it.
If Whistler Mountain is open at all, Emerald is almost certainly turning.

What Emerald 6 Express needs to open
Emerald opens with whatever the mountain opens on, which in recent seasons has meant settled snow depths at 1,835 m ranging from 27 cm to 179 cm. In the thinnest years the resort has run it with a mandatory download from the Roundhouse, because the ski-outs to the valley have not filled in.
That is the practical caveat: Emerald being open does not always mean you can ski back to the village.
Expect a download in a thin early season
In both 2018-19 and 2023-24 the resort opened with Emerald running but required riders to download the Whistler Village Gondola rather than ski to the valley. The mid-mountain holds snow well before the lower runs do. If you are visiting in the first fortnight, plan for the possibility of downloading at the end of the day.
What to expect for 2026-27
Whistler Blackcomb has confirmed a target opening day of Friday 20 November 2026, conditions permitting.
Treat every date on this page as a planning window rather than a fixed commitment. Lift openings are decided on the morning, on the basis of snow depth, avalanche control work, wind and visibility.
When does Emerald 6 Express close?
Emerald runs to the end of Whistler Mountain’s season, in recent years between 14 and 21 April.
Common questions
When does Emerald Chair open at Whistler?
Emerald 6 Express opens on Whistler Mountain’s opening day every season. For 2026-27 that is expected to be 20 November 2026, conditions permitting.
Is Emerald good for beginners?
It serves Whistler’s mid-mountain Family Ski Zone with wide groomed greens and blues, so it suits improving beginners and intermediates. True first-timers are better served by the Olympic Chair and the learning carpets at Olympic Station.
Will I be able to ski back to the village if Emerald is open?
Not always in the first couple of weeks. In thin early seasons the resort has kept Emerald running while requiring riders to download the Whistler Village Gondola, because the lower ski-outs had not filled in.
