Glacier Express Opening Dates
Glacier Express typically opens around the third week of December. It opened around 20 December 2025 and around 21 December 2024. For 2026-27 it carries extra significance, because the new Showcase Chair sits above it and cannot open until Glacier Express is running.
Where Glacier Express sits in the opening order
Glacier Express runs from Glacier Creek up into Blackcomb’s high alpine, and it is the gateway lift for the mountain’s most serious terrain: the Blackcomb Glacier, the Showcase area, and the Spanky’s Ladder gates.
It opens later than 7th Heaven despite serving a similar elevation band, because the terrain above it is more committing and needs more avalanche control before patrol can drop ropes.
New for 2026-27: the Showcase Chair replaces the Showcase T-Bar above Glacier Express. That makes Glacier Express the bottleneck for the resort’s newest terrain access — the Showcase Chair cannot open before it does.

Historical opening dates
Whistler Blackcomb does not publish a per-lift opening archive, so these dates come from the resort’s own Terrain Alert announcements and from archived snapshots of its lift status feed.
| Season | Opened | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2023-24 | By 3 January 2024 | Confirmed closed on 7, 21 and 25 December |
| 2024-25 | Around 21 December 2024 | Announced 20 Dec alongside Symphony on Whistler |
| 2025-26 | Around Saturday 20 December 2025 | Flagged locally on 19 Dec: “Glacier Chair will be opening on Saturday” |
| 2026-27 | Expected third week of December | Also the gate for the new Showcase Chair |
How much snow does Glacier Express need?
Using settled snow depth recorded at the Roundhouse weather station at 1,835 m on the day the lift opened.
| Season | Opened | Snow on the ground | Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025-26 | 20 Dec 2025 | 132 cm | 17 cm fresh that day, −5 °C |
Glacier Express opened with 132 cm of settled snow at 1,835 m in 2025-26 — noticeably more than 7th Heaven’s 97 cm, and in line with Symphony on Whistler.
That higher threshold reflects what sits above it. Blackcomb Glacier and the Spanky’s Ladder gates are serious, committing terrain, and patrol needs a properly consolidated snowpack before opening the lift that feeds them.
Rain is the enemy, not lack of snow
What delays the alpine is not a quiet November — it is a warm one. In 2023-24 there were 20 days of rain at 1,835 m before New Year, totalling 252 mm, plus 40 days above freezing. Snow fell, then washed away or froze into crust, and the alpine stayed shut deep into January.
Compare 2016-17: zero rain days in the alpine before January and a single day above freezing. The snow that fell stayed, and the alpine opened early.
Mechanical closures are worth knowing about
Glacier Express is a 1992 lift and, apart from 7th Heaven, the oldest high-speed quad still running on Blackcomb. On 30 January 2025 it was taken out of service with a damaged gearbox and stayed closed for well over a week — a reminder that an alpine lift being shut is not always about snow.
What to expect for 2026-27
Whistler Blackcomb has confirmed a target opening day of Friday 20 November 2026, conditions permitting.
There is one significant caveat this season. NOAA has issued an El Niño Advisory giving a greater than 90 per cent chance of a very strong El Niño through winter 2026-27, with a real possibility of the strongest event in the record dating back to 1950.
El Niño winters have historically started slowly at Whistler. Across the last thirteen seasons, El Niño Novembers delivered an average of 33 cm of snow at Roundhouse against 109 cm in La Niña Novembers, and roughly half the settled snow depth by the end of November.
Two things stop that being a prediction. El Niño mainly delays the start rather than ruining the season — by New Year the snowfall gap narrows considerably. And the strongest El Niño in our records, 2015-16, saw Whistler open early on 19 November with 332 cm down by New Year. Treat it as a tendency worth planning around, not a forecast.
Treat every date on this page as a planning window rather than a fixed commitment. Lift openings are decided on the morning, on the basis of snow depth, avalanche control work, wind and visibility.
When does Glacier Express close?
Glacier Express finished on 9 May 2026, running well into Blackcomb’s spring operations but closing about a week before 7th Heaven, Jersey Cream and Catskinner, which ran to 18 May.
Common questions
When does Glacier Express open on Blackcomb?
Typically the third week of December. It opened around 20 December 2025 and around 21 December 2024. In the poor 2023-24 season it was not confirmed running until 3 January.
How much snow does Glacier Express need?
It opened with 132 cm of settled snow at 1,835 m in 2025-26, which is more than 7th Heaven needs and roughly the same as Symphony on Whistler.
Do I need Glacier Express to reach the new Showcase Chair?
Yes. The Showcase Chair sits above Glacier Express, so it cannot open until Glacier Express is running. Glacier Express is effectively the gatekeeper for Blackcomb Glacier access.
How do I reach Blackcomb Glacier?
Either from the top of the Showcase area, or via Spanky’s Ladder off the top of Glacier Express, which is an expert entrance. The runs sit inside Blackcomb Glacier Provincial Park and close whenever avalanche control requires.
