Magic Chair Opening Dates
Magic Chair usually opens within the first few weeks of the season, but not reliably on opening day. Whistler Blackcomb does not announce its opening and it does not appear in published opening-day lift lists, so if you are bringing beginners early in the season, check before you travel.
Where Magic Chair sits in the opening order
Magic Chair is the beginner and learning lift at Blackcomb Base II — a short, slow fixed-grip triple serving the Magic Zone on the valley floor.
Like Olympic Chair on Whistler, it is governed by different constraints to the rest of the mountain. It sits low, at around the 700 m mark, which is the last elevation band to hold snow. And low-angle beginner terrain that gets heavily used needs solid cover before it is safe.
It has never appeared in an opening-day package we can find, and the archived status records show it closed on 7 December 2023 and running by 21 December that year.

Historical opening dates
Magic Chair openings are not announced. These dates come from archived snapshots of Whistler Blackcomb’s own lift status feed, so each is the earliest date the lift can be confirmed running rather than necessarily its first day.

What Magic Chair needs to open
At roughly 700 m, Magic Chair sits in the elevation band that holds snow last. Beginner terrain also needs genuinely good cover, because low-angle runs scrape down fast under heavy use.
If beginners are the point of your trip, do not book the opening fortnight without checking. Whistler’s Olympic Chair has the same issue.
What to expect for 2026-27
Whistler Blackcomb has confirmed a target opening day of Friday 20 November 2026, conditions permitting.
Treat every date on this page as a planning window rather than a fixed commitment. Lift openings are decided on the morning, on the basis of snow depth, avalanche control work, wind and visibility.
When does Magic Chair close?
Magic Chair finished on 9 April 2026, well before the rest of Blackcomb. As the snow leaves the valley floor in spring, the low-elevation beginner terrain is the first to go.
Common questions
When does Magic Chair open on Blackcomb?
Usually within the first few weeks of the season, but it is not part of the published opening-day package. It was confirmed closed on 7 December 2023 and running by 21 December that year.
Where can beginners ski at Blackcomb early season?
The Magic Zone at Base II is the main beginner area. If Magic Chair has not opened, the alternatives are the learning carpets, or heading to Whistler Mountain’s Olympic Station zone.
When does Magic Chair close?
Early. It finished on 9 April 2026, more than a month before Blackcomb’s closing day, because the valley-floor beginner terrain loses its snow first.
